Canon Pixma iX6550

Supports A3 printingHigh resolutionFast maximum of 9,600 dpi for printing speedNo maps locations memory or PictBridge supportNo Wi - Fi connectivity

Canon Pixma iX6550 is a growing number of medium format printers on the market that allows you to print at A3, while remaining relatively affordable, as it can be purchased online for about £ 160.

To be able to accept A3 sheets of paper, the Canon iX6550 of course has to be larger than your printer inkjet average. It is certainly very large extent 549 mm, but it is not all the tall and deep, at least when the paper trays are not removed. With trays, that can accept up to 150 sheets fully scopes for use with sheets of A3, footprint becomes very important. However, the trays are telescopic, so you do not the have removed all the way if you do not use these large leaves, which helps save a little space.

Like many models targeted at home users, Canon gave the top of the printer a glossy finish, which looks attractive initially. Unfortunately, however, it really shows fingerprints poorly, with much use can quickly start to look a bit sordid. On the sides, the frame is finished matte plastic, which is easier to keep clean.

This model did not support networks, so the only way to connect to your computer via the USB port. Unfortunately there is no other USB port, so that the printer does not support PictBridge direct printing from a digital camera. Also missing slots for memory cards, which is perhaps not surprising since there is no LCD screen. In fact, the only controls on the front are a power button and a Cancel - button all other parameters are controlled via the software driver for the printer on your computer.

The iX6550 uses five cartridges, as he has a black extra cartridge that is used for the printing of the photo.

Installation of the print head and cartridges is quite simple, as when lift you the cover mechanism moves to the centre to give you easy access. The iX6550 uses five cartridges. There is a standard black cartridge to print in black and white, with individual cyan, magenta and yellow, an extra cartridge black to provide deeper black levels contrast is more printing of photos.

A3 printing is the main sales of this model, but it can work with sizes of sheet up to 15 x 10 cm, with printing borderless supported overall of all sizes. The maximum print resolution is also high at 9 600 dpi.

When it comes to print the speed of the iX6550 is not a bad performer. In General, pretreatment, the time between clicking on print on your computer and the printer actually kicked in life, is about 10 to 12 seconds for each document. He was able to print the ten pages of our document in black and white text in one minute and four seconds and it took two minutes and 17 seconds to provide our presentation of the company of ten pages in color. Ten copies of our test graphics colour document printing on the other hand took two minutes and 38 seconds. All these results are relatively fast speeds for an inkjet model. Is any left behind, when it comes to printing photo, as it spewed out a single copy of our photo of test of 4 x 6 inches in one minute and three seconds.

Print quality is generally quite good, although the printed text was a slight amount of bleed here and there and no was not as clean as that you will get a laser printer. When this model really excels, however, is graphic color and printing of photos. Not only it is fast, but it also produces clean and rich colors with no speckles or bands that you sometimes see on lesser models.

Fresh black work A4 page print out to about 3.59%, including the paper, which is a little on the high side, but an A4 page colour works at about 9.34 p per page which is slightly better than average.

If you need printing A3 then Canon Pixma iX6550 is a fairly decent option, mainly because of its fairly rapid output and the results of high-quality product. However, given the lack of extras such as Wi - Fi and PictBridge support, it seems a little expensive next to the competition. For example, Brother DCP-6690CW offers more features, including a Wi - Fi card slots, a touch screen, PictBridge and memory for a similar cost. That said, this model is a bit slow and produces good results as the barrel.
