Leica M9 - P.

Leica announced the M9 - P, a variant of its 18MP full-frame M9 rangefinder camera. The p version wins the Sapphire LCD already seen on the M8.2 Leica but now featuring anti-reflective coatings enhanced for the improvement of the visibility in difficult lighting conditions. To provide a discreet appearance, the M9 - P fails the traditional Leica red dot and M9 designation of the front of the camera, the Leica name is rather engaved in the metal top-plate in the traditional script of the company.

Designed especially for professional photographers, new ultra-discreet version of
the Leica M9 added to the rangefinder Leica portfolio

Leica has today a new version of the camera smaller, full-frame digital system of the world: the Leica M9 - P. This new model will sit alongside the Leica M9 in portfolio telemetric company, providing an alternative, more discreet and resilient design which reinforces the nature of the M9 par excellence - and especially meets the needs of professional photographers. The new model will be available in a chrome classic Silver or subtle black paint finish.

Providing the same technical specifications as the very successful Leica M9, M9 - P combines all the advantages of the original: compact size, full-frame, 18 megapixel 24 x 36 mm sensor (35 mm format), sophisticated image processing and robust construction, with features designed for the professional user or photographers who prefer a pure style, yet more discrete.

The Leica M9 - P includes a Crystal resistant to scratch, Sapphire covering on the LCD. This material is so difficult that the screen can only be produced with special diamond tools and is one of the hardest materials in the world. Accordingly, coverage sapphire glass LCD is extremely wear-resistant and virtually unbreakable, means many years of reliable use. In addition, thanks to an anti-reflective coating on both sides of the cover, examine the images on the screen in composition and after capture is further enhanced, especially in adverse lighting conditions.

The external covering of the body of the M9 - P, finished leather vulcanite, features a coarselytextured more finish that ensures a constant support during the shooting, to the M9 - P of the individual and secure in hand.

A discrete feature more Leica M9 - P is his minimalist style, which focuses on the most essential aspects. Many professional photographers using Leica cameras are known about the band on the "red dot" logo Leica to make their equipment as discreet and unobtrusive as possible. For this reason, the logo of the red dot Leica and M9 lettering on the front have been omitted. Instead, the top plate is etched with the name of Leica in classic script.

Since 1954, the Leica M system represents a genus unmistakable, individual photography and a photographic style very aware. With a Leica M, the photographer becomes a "part of the action" in the process of capturing images difficult, authentic and creative.

The telemetry frames precisely the stroke of the photographer is considering, while providing a clear vision of the scene outside the framework of the viewfinder. This allows the photographer to predict the decisive moment and capture discreetly and reliable at the right time - in all areas of photography, photojournalism, broadcast, and "light" for the capture of portraits and aesthetics, fine-art images.

Another advantage for discrete photography is almost silent shutter, a feature of the M9 and M9-p.. In addition, when exposure over long times requiring a highly stable camera position are essential, only a slight pressure on the shutter mode "soft release" button is required. Photographers can also choose the most appropriate time for re-cocking the shutter.

The functions of the Leica M are always built for extreme durability and a long working life. The highest quality of materials, complex manufacturing processes and meticulous Assembly manual installation of the Leica in Germany guarantee functional reliability for years to come.

The commitment of Leica System compatibility, almost all Leica M built since 1954 can be used with the M9 and M9 - P - an important factor in the value of the Mr. the 6 megapixel image sensor series, specially designed and developed for the M9, to capture the full 35 mm without compromise film format. All lenses mounted on the M9 and M9 - million P therefore offer the same focal as originally planned and the enormous potential yield of the portfolio wide lens M, with 16 to 135 mm focal lengths, can be fully exploited by the two cameras.

The Leica M9 - P (available in black paint or chrome-plated silver) should be available at the United Kingdom of June

Add in the fact that the laptop is relatively small and light and you have a package full classy.

Toshiba has opted for a 14 inch screen with a matte finish, rather than on glossy paper, to conserve the reflections to a minimum. The screen is bright and color punch through I. That said, the angles of view are not quite as wide that we expected form a model in this price range, and resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels is nothing special.

The keyboard is in a different category. It is truly one of the best that we come across. It uses broad, flat keys that have enough space between them, but what separated sets is just how strong and appropriate action is.

Keyboard set the temperature of our shells soared.

Unlike most laptops of today, the 11th R840 has a pointer stick and a trackpad. There are two sets of trackpad buttons - one above the ramp for when you use the pointer and a below for when you are in based on the keypad.

There is also a dedicated button for turning off the buffer and the pointer when you use your laptop with an external mouse. Both the pointer and the buffer are a pleasure to use, and the buttons seemed very solid and reliable during our test period.

R840-11th packs a Sandy Bridge processor dual-core Intel Core i5-2520M, running at 2.5 GHz. He has also 4 GB of RAM, which is enough to give room for operating system Windows 7 Professional of this notebook to stretch their legs. The processor is fast enough, as evidenced by his reference to 7,315 PCMark05 score. It will have little dealing with disorder of the most demanding business apps.

One of the benefits of the latest Sandy Bridge processors is that they understand much faster integrated graphics than previous bullets of the company. In 3DMark06, this has contributed to the laptop to 4,053, you will be able to play older games on it, but it does not go to run the latest shooters of the first person at a decent rate.

Elsewhere, the spec is quite impressive. 320 GB hard drive is reasonably spacious and there are many other locations and the ports. Above the DVD burner, for example, there is a smart card reader, and you also get an ExpressCard slot and SD card reader.

On the one hand, you will find a 3.0 USB port, while on the other hand, there is a USB 2.0 port, as well as a port eSATA and USB dual function which is very practical for the fast connection of the fast peripherals such as external hard drives. There is also a VGA connector and Toshiba included a DisplayPort too, although there still aren't that many monitors DisplayPort compatible on the market.

Your laptop battery life is not bad. He managed to run for 1 hour and 41 minutes in the classic Eater battery test. It is a very tax test, continually running the processor at full stroke up to what the battery dies, therefore, under actual conditions, you should get much more long battery life.

If you need a laptop computer for purposes of work, the Toshiba Tecra R840-11F is well worth considering. There a lot of muscle under the hood, the keyboard is excellent, and its battery life and design are also decent.

Best alternatives MacBook

Recently, Apple unveiled its new MacBook Air, with its latest operating system, Mac OS X Lion. What Apple has failed to highlight, is dropped as quietly the faithful old MacBook in his store.

If you are after an Apple laptop computer, your choice are now the MacBook Pro, with its elegant monocoque design and powerful guts, or the new MacBook Air, which is quite thin slice through parmesan.

To help in your quest, we've provided five good alternatives to the MacBook, which is now resting peacefully in Silicon heaven. Rest your bones in peace, MacBook polycarbonate.

Sony's VPCEA3S1E is a beast of fantasy - research. It is slightly larger than the MacBook, a 14 screen instead of 13.3-inch, filling. The convoluted surface is rather interesting, and this machine is available in white, like the MacBook died.

The Q430 costs approximately £ 660, but she do not purchase until you have read our full review.

Apple is pushing its users into a world without media. It has never shipped a Mac with a Blu - ray drive, and probably never will, and its sleekest laptop, the MacBook Air, doesn't even support DVDs.

The company's business is built on the back of broadband and a world in which we download everything from music and movies to upgrades and apps. Apple's decision to start Mac OS X Lion as a Mac App Store download wasn't unexpected, then, but where does that leave you if your Mac refuses to boot one morning? How do you get Lion roaring again without access to the Mac App Store?

Install Lion on a clean hard drive, and you'll wonder how a 4 GB download has come to consume so much space - it took up nearly 10 GB in our case. It's not a bit versus bytes discrepancy that's to blame, but a secret partition created as part of the install process, in which Lion installs a set of recovery tools. This is kept hidden, and appears in neither Startup Disk, which you'll find in System Preferences, nor in Disk Utility. The only way to find it is to reboot, holding alt on the keyboard (marked 'option' on some older keyboards).

Instead of booting straight into Lion, your Mac will display a list of your available drives, including external units and any CDs in your optical drive, if you have one.

Select the drive called Recovery HD and click the arrow beneath it. If you're using a trackpad, you'll have to enable the proper clicking action throughout this operation, as tap-to-select and Lion gestures are disabled during the recovery process.

Your Mac will boot into a stripped-down version of OS X installed on the recovery partition. Called 'Base System', this dump most of the core operating-system features, leaving you with access to only a set of system utilities and minimal language and network preferences.

Your Mac won't automatically log you onto a wireless network, as your access credentials are tied to your user account. Unless you're using wired Ethernet, you'll need to use the AirPort menu to select your local network and enter the security details in order to use the online help function or reinstall your system from the Internet.

Now launch Disk Utility, which, in recovery mode, reveals your disk's hidden partition. It's called 'disk1', and sits below the sidebar divider. You can select it, objective, as the startup partition, you can neither erase nor distribution. it You can, however, work with your primary boot drive, which is inaccessible in the full Lion environment, and which, in this instance, is the first drive listed above the divider.

Decided at this point whether you want to blitz everything and perform a clean install or simply write new system files over the top of the existing OS, keeping all of your documents, user accounts and settings in place.

To perform a clean install, click your boot drive - not any of its partitions - and then the 'erase' tab. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type and optionally give the drive a name, then click the 'erase...' button. Skip the rest of this section and either reinstall from Time Machine or download a new copy of Lion, as detailed below.

If you want to try and retain your data while reinstalling Lion over the top of problematic system files, start by checking your drive for errors. Some less serious problems may have been caused by a permissions mismatch, which will stop your system or user account from accessing vital files.

Click the partition on which your operating system is installed - in this case it's called Mac OS X - and, under the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility examines each file system on the partition and correct any mismatched permissions, detailing what changes it has made, if any, until the process is complete.

You should also verify or repair your disk to eliminate any problems in the structure of the disk's filing system.

Now that we know our boot drive is in good shape, we can set about reinstalling Lion. By far the finding method is to recover your system from a Time Machine archive - Mac OS X Utilities can piece together your complete system by reassembling each element from your incremental backups.

Only select this option if you know for sure that your Time Machine archive is up-to-date, as it will reinstate your system's last-known condition. If your Time Machine vault has been unplugged for the last month, the reinstalled system will have lost any work completed during that time.

Reinstalling in this way is an all-or-nothing option. You can't reinstate individual system files or discrete working files - for that you should use Time Machine itself within OS x. Neither should you use this method to transfer your files from one Mac to another while upgrading your system. Migration Wizard, again part of the full-blown bone X, handles this already, transferring your files across a local network or double-ended cable.

If you're happy to reinstall Lion this way, Utilities will search for a visible Time Machine drive. If your backups are stored on a Time Capsule, rather than a USB drive, ensure you have enabled AirPort from the menu bar before going any further.

If you don't have a recent Time Machine backup, you'll need to download a new Lion install package. Ensure you have a live Internet connection and pick Reinstall Mac OS x Utilities will check your eligibility and body it finds no. problems, display the end - user license agreement.

This will be broadly similar to the one that you agreed to when first installing the OS, but, if that was some time ago, it may have been updated, so be sure you are happy with its contents before clicking 'agree', which you'll have to do twice.

Finally, choose the drive on which you want to reinstall Lion. You won 't be able to choose the Recovery HD, as that's the one from which you' re running the install process, but your main boot partition will be available. Pick this and click 'install' to begin the download process.

Bear in mind that Lion will download a complete new install, not just replacements for the corrupted files currently in place on your drive. If you have a peak-hours cap on your broadband, you might want to wait until your service becomes unmetered before completing the last step.

Best phones on Vodafone

Vodafone is big daddy red mobile telephony networks, catering to 25 per cent of the UK market. That makes the network go - to for many companies, who would like to have a reliable behemoth take care of them.

But this also makes the network seem less eager to attract new customers than managed as three. To do this, that it is not always the cheapest operator, it is useful to compare offers.

On the plu side, Vodafone offers an excellent range of phones, including frequent exclusivities scored from different manufacturers. See below for our selection of the best.

Because it is so huge, Vodafone tends to be reliable for the coverage of the solid, good network around the United Kingdom. But, before you commit, you must check black holes in your area by using the auditor of the coverage.

If you are struggling to get a Vodafone signal in your home, and you do not want to pass network, you can invest even more money in a Signal some femtocell. This dialog box connects to your home Internet connection and creates a bubble of 3 G to your phone to use. It works, but we are not great fans - not only is the cost of box £ 50, but you are also responsible for the cost and maintenance of the Internet connection to work.

If you plan use a lot of data - a bet that if you choose an Android smart phone or iPhone - watch for the Vodafone data caps. He removed his allocation of data a single 500 MB in 2010. Even worse is that it will charge you a five once the pass you, without any warning.

When it comes to customer service, Vodafone has to work harder. A survey of customer satisfaction by whom? the magazine has ranked the network towards the middle of the pack to keep contract and pay as you go customers happy.

Vodafone is better in the Ofcom data, however. According to Ofcom, Vodafone has the low number of complaints of all networks, except for O2 customers.

Canon PIXMA MX885

Fast printing duplex resultsSupports speedsGood printingLarge screenStraightforward menusExpensive to run in the printing of long termDuplex is slow

All-in-one inkjet printer Canon Pixma MX885 aims to bring tons of features to your home office. With color and photo printing capacity, it also packs in the scan and fax functions, and includes an autoloader for documents, and support for double-sided printing. You can buy online for about £ 150.

For a printer all-in-one ink jet, the MX885 has a large footprint at 491 by 448 mm. The glossy finish on the bottom of the printer appears to be quite interesting, but Canon wisely used a coating on the Control Panel, it is less likely to attract sordid fingerprints.

Towards the centre of the Panel, there are large color screen, 3 inches. Combined with a grid of buttons that light up in the modes were selected, which makes it very easy to use printer. There are buttons dedicated to basic functions such as copy, fax, scanning and printing photos of memory cards.

Behind one door curved, flip-out on the lower right, you will find three memory card slots, supporting all major formats including SD, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick and CompactFlash. Under it, there is a USB PictBridge compatible, so you can read photos directly from compatible cameras.

The bottom of the printer is home to a 150 sheets feeder which displays its content in a tray drop-down above. Cleverly, if it is not already dropped when the printer starts, it opens automatically before the arrival of the first page. There is also an another tray lower on the back of the printer that can be used either regular paper feed or, more likely, photo paper.

The top of the scanner is houses a dadf fax or photocopy the documents to multi-page without having to manually placing each sheet on the scanner glass surface. This holds up to 35 sheets and can be a standby of time, especially for those who use the printer in a busy Home Office.

The large colour screen makes it easy to select photos on memory cards.

Install the printer and print cartridges are a process fairly quick and easy, thanks to a graphical wizard screen color. Once you lift the lid, the printing mechanism moves toward the Center to make it easier to install the semi-permanent print head. You slot then the five cartridges in this and on each cartridge LED lights up to show you that this is in place. Once this work is complete, the printer then produces an alignment page and you are ready to crack.

When it comes to connectivity, there are many options. With USB port, there is also a connector on the rear and 802 Ethernet. .11n ready, integrated Wi - Fi. Implementation of Ethernet connectivity and Wi - Fi is pleasantly simple, too.

The scanner has an optical resolution of 2400 x 4, 800 dpi. Although the scanners were not the strengths of models of all-in-one gun in the past, this is in a good view. It manages to retain the subtle colours when capturing pictures and levels of detail are also impressive. It is fast, when it comes to copy, taking just 18 seconds to produce a black and white photocopy. Interestingly, this model also lets you save scans and faxes of memory cards or USB storage devices.

Like many Canon models, the MX885 is fast enough when it comes to printing. The double-sided printing is rather slow, as the duplex takes some time to feed the paper in the printer for the second round, but the duplex is fast.

Our document of 10 pages of black and white test took a simple 1 minute and 8 seconds to print. The printer pumped our presentation of ten pages color in 2 minutes and 3 seconds. It proved fast in the graphics test too, managing to finish ten copies of our test in 2 minutes and 28 seconds sheet. Photo print was just as impressive - the MX885 ended our 4 - by 6-inch printed in a 33 seconds Flash test.

The printing speed is not at the expense of quality, either. The MX885 produces thick, inky black text that is also very crisp and sharp. Colors look ace too, and cannot really be imputed to the quality photo printing. Photos look very vives and tones even skin are free spots for some very professional results.

Costs of operation of the printer, it is not the cheapest that we met, however. It uses a total of five cartridges and, at current prices, labour costs to about 4.9 p for a page in black and white and 11.2 percent for a page of color, including 0.7% for the costs of paper prints. It is considerably more expensive than models from Kodak, for example.

The Canon Pixma MX885 is an excellent all-in-one printer. It is easy to use and produces impressive results very quickly. Its high operating costs are something to keep in mind, however.

Kodak ESP 9250

Ethernet and Wi - Fi connectivityGood range featuresDuplex printingLow running costsNot the printer more rapid over the color blockCombined cartridge

The all-in-one printer from Kodak ESP 9250 ink jet is the big brother of the ESP 7250. It adds support feeding automatic faxing of documents, it is more appropriate for use in an Office at home. As with most Kodak printers, it's more expensive initially than equivalent rival machines, costs around £ 180, but it is less expensive that run most of the competition.

Visually, the 9250 is very similar to the 7250. Essentially, it resembles a large box that curved sides and a large mouth in the environment where the printed sheets are feeding on a telescopic tray. Above the mouth is located the command flip-out panel which houses a screen 2.4 inches, with buttons for various printing, analysis, reproduction and fax functions. There is also a numeric keypad to dial the fax number.

The front is home to two memory card slots. The first takes care of xD, SD and Memory Stick cards while the second welcomes the CompactFlash cards. Under these, there is a USB port compatible PictBridge allows you to use the printer to capture photos directly from compatible cameras or USB drives.

Kodak has added an automatic document feeder at the top of the flatbed scanner. It accepts documents of up to 30 sheets and allows to copy automatically or by fax of the multipage documents, without having to manually placing each sheet on the scanner glass surface - a great time-saver when you use the 9250 in a Home Office.

The main paper tray at the bottom contains up to 100 sheets of paper, which is not a huge amount of a home office model. But it also section House a paper separate photo, so you don't have to remove the normal A4 sheet when you want to print pictures, as you do with some other models.

Of the large 9250 sign and the abundance of buttons make it simple to use.

The 9250 can be used on USB, Wi - Fi or Ethernet. The last two options make it easy to share the printer with other computers on your network, and the two are quite simple to implement.

It is also easy to install the cartridges. There are just two cartridges as Kodak combines all color inks in a single cartridge. It is not the best idea in our book, as if you are running low as a color, you must replace the entire cartridge. The semi-permanent slot in two cartridges in a print head, and then locations in the printing mechanism. Once the 9250 has completed printing an alignment page and you have loaded the drivers on your computer,'re you good to go.

Integrated scanner is reasonably fast scan documents and photos, and the results are generally good quality. It is also fast when it comes to photocopy - our test page for black and white was completed in just 23 seconds. While the copied text crunchy, it is however visible bands in the black areas of the page.

The 9250 supports automatic duplex printing you can print on both sides of a sheet of paper without having to manually it would return and feed to the printer. But, as the 7250, printing in duplex mode, the overall print area is reduced. We have found no solution to this annoying problem.

The 9250 is no speed demon when it comes to printing. Our document of 10 pages of black and white text is rather quiet 3 minutes and 1 second to complete, while ten copies of our graphics test worksheet have been similarly slow to emerge, taking 3 minutes and 35 seconds. A presentation of ten pages was slower still, 4 minutes and 23 seconds. Photo print speed was not bad, but 51 seconds for a 4 - by 6-inch print.

Photos look impressive, with little dots that affects the results of some lesser printers. But, although the text is not exactly bad, it is not as clean as it could be. There is also some of the visible bands in color in the graphics.

Kodak has managed to reduce the cost of printing to a minimum. At the current price of the cartridge, a page in black and white works in a very reasonable 2.3 p, then as a color page is also good walks, to 4.5 percent. These two awards include 0.7% for the costs of paper.

If you are willing to sacrifice some speed and quality printing for less expensive operating costs, the Kodak ESP 9250 is likely to prove a worthy partner of printing in the long term.

Pioneer AVH-6300BT

APP mode allows you to watch videoPlenty iPod and iPhone interface iPod audio and video sourcesTerrible screenCan can't control the add-on displaySat-nav fresh additional £ 370

Sick stereo mounted at the puny plant in your car? You want the action playing film, camera-viewing sat-nav-carrying offered by high range car stereo systems? Worry not - Pioneer £ 500 AVH-6300BT is there to solve your problems. Kind of.

The unit in a single DIN slot normal dimension slot in your dashboard, but not be fooled by its small size, as it packs a list of specifications that would put most shame stereo head units.

Hit a button in the centre of the Panel and a 7-inch touch screen, adjustable angle folds to join the party. The display allows you to take advantage of a multitude of Visual Media, including DVD and DivX movies. It even lets you play video via applications on your iPod or iPhone for everyone in the cabin to see.

In theory, this should be the AVH-6300BT something great on the surface of the Earth, but there is a small problem - its display is one of the worst ever, we've come across. 1, 440 X 234 pixel resolution is so low, it is possible to see each pixel which includes an image at some distance, and the screen flickers outrageously, making it almost impossible to discern any finesse the details of your photos. We could barely on the number of the plate images of cars.

7-Inch screen is sensitive to the touch.

Movie playback is slightly more impressive due to the fact that the images are constantly in motion, deceive your eyes into thinking that you are witnessing something extraordinary. Be warned, though - the device will play only video if the handbrake is fully committed, this feature is only of use when you are stopped in traffic.

The above mode of iPod and iPhone app is broken, too. Sometimes video playback works and sometimes doesn't, and the AVH-6300BT does not support Apple's iPod functionality, as well as the graphical user interface for most applications is not displayed on the screen, which is a terrible oversight. For making the most of the media on your Apple device, you will constantly need to fiddle with it you drive.

The AVH-6300BT allows users to enjoy audio from a variety of more conventional sources. The USB port on the front allows you to connect your mass storage device, there is a slot for SD card behind the front panel drive, AM and FM radio tuners are appearing (DAB is remarkably absent) and there is, of course, a reader of CD loading slot bottom of the screen.

Those who want to use the AVH-6300BT as a sat-nav may end up disappointed, as this functionality is not as standard. To enable it, you need to buy the AVIC-F220 navigation optional unit at a cost of £ 370, pushing the total cost of the system up to about £ 900.

If money is no object, you will find that the AVIC-F220 add-on provides a few relatively advanced features, such as the ability to create driving reports that allow you to keep track of environmental respectful way, you are driving. Unfortunately, the low resolution of the screen means that is probably better to buy a sat-nav autonomous or using one on your Smartphone.

On a positive note, the AVH-6300BT supports Bluetooth, so users can pair of their mobile phone with the system and to make or receive calls on the loudspeakers of the car. It can also be connected to a rear camera to help you park your car easier and its function of two rear passenger areas can enjoy different audio or video to the front, although you will need additional screens to take advantage of this feature.

You buy pioneer AVH-6300BT? Yes, if you do not mind to pay on the chances for a terrible display and some half-baked features. We recommend that you pop in your local Pioneer dealer, so you can try this and other units for yourself before your cash flow. We believe that you will find that there are countless other car head units, including a large number of Pioneer itself, providing a better experience.

I'm Feeling Lucky: The Confessions of Google Employee Number 59

Comparing Google to an ordinary business is like comparing a rocket to an Edsel. No academic analysis or bystanderâ??s account can capture it. Now Doug Edwards, Employee Number 59, offers the first inside view of Google, giving readers a chance to fully experience the bizarre mix of camaraderie and competition at this phenomenal company. Edwards, Googleâ??s first director of marketing and brand management, describes it as it happened. We see the first, pioneering steps of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the companyâ??s young, idiosyncratic partners; the evolution of the companyâ??s famously nonhierarchical structure (where every employee finds a problem to tackle or a feature to create and works independently); the development of brand identity; the races to develop and implement each new feature; and the many ideas that never came to pass. Above all, Edwardsâ??a former journalist who knows how to writeâ??captures the â??Google Experience,â? the rollercoaster ride of being part of a company creating itself in a whole new universe.

Iâ??m Feeling Lucky captures for the first time the unique, self-invented, yet profoundly important culture of the worldâ??s most transformative corporation.

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Douglas Edwards

Q: Why is Iâ??m Feeling Lucky different from other books about Google?

A: There have been many fine books written about Google and its impact on the world, but all have been told from an outsiderâ??s perspective. Iâ??m Feeling Lucky is a personal accounting of what it felt like to be part of the company as it grew from sixty people to tens of thousands. I was a forty-one-year-old middle manager thrust into an unfamiliar world ruled by two brilliant founders with a unique management style, and the book details how difficult it was for me to make the adjustment.

Personal anecdotes are interspersed with an explanation of the key events in Googleâ??s technical development, largely told in the words of those who actually built the systems that made Google work as fast and well as it does. Many of these individuals have remained anonymous until now.

Iâ??m Feeling Lucky is really aimed at those who are interested both in what Google did to ensure success during its formative years and how it felt to be an ill-prepared participant dropped into the heart of an exploding startup.

Q: What is it really like to work with co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin?

A: On a personal level, I found them to be pretty easy-going and approachable. Sergey has a wicked sense of humor and Larry always struck me as very sincere. They liked to surround themselves with intelligent, open minded, curious, and energetic people, who were not afraid to challenge their ideas. They always wanted people to think on a grander scale than they typically did and they didn't like people saying "no" rather than "here's a better way to do that." They didn't get hung up on titles, academic pedigree, or tenure at the company if an idea was a good one.

Q: What is the Google workplace like compared to other companies'?

A: Compared to every other place I had worked, it was pretty wonderful. We had free meals every day that were as good as any served by the finest local restaurants, great workout facilities, massage therapists and doctors on staff, and an annual ski trip for all employees. On the other hand, the stress and demands were constant and intense. I went through a couple of weeks at the Mercury News during a newspaper circulation war that really challenged me. At Google, it was like that every day for my five years at the company. We were expected to be available every hour of every day and lots of key decisions were made after midnight. If I wasnâ??t there for the discussion, the decision was made without my input.

Q: In the book, you relay some very heated discussions about how Google dealt with user privacy issues. What were the most significant problems, and how did you handle them as one of the chief marketing executives?

A: The biggest privacy issue during my time at Google related to the launch of Gmail and the fact that it scanned mail to insert content-related ads in usersâ?? inboxes. That created a firestorm that engulfed the company and was very hard to extinguish. There were many contributing factors, but at its heart was the fact that engineers knew no person was reading user mail to insert ads and so insisted that there was NO privacy issue. While technically correct, this perspective denied the concerns of users who did not share the same trust and confidence in Google that its engineering staff did. The foundersâ?? insistence on not acknowledging usersâ?? fears made it difficult to respond to them in a sensitive manner. Eventually, we were able to get enough Gmail accounts out to journalists and opinion leaders to begin turning the tide, but the process was painful and damaging to Googleâ??s brand.

Q: What was it really like behind the scenes of the Google-AOL deal?

A: The negotiations with AOL were challenging and unpleasant for those involved from the Google side. AOL had little interest in Google initially, other than as a weapon to wield against Overtureâ??the leading supplier of search-related advertising at the time. Overture and Google fought a pitched battle to win the account, which was worth more than a billion dollars in revenue, and threw everything they could at each other as AOL stood above the fray, egging them on.

Even as AOL became aware that Googleâ??s technology and ad relevance were superior to those of its competitor, and Googleâ??s potential for revenue generation was greater, they demanded more and more in terms of outrageous payment guarantees and access to the companyâ??s proprietary algorithms. When AOL ultimately signed the contract with Google, Overture tried one last desperate ploy to sabotage the deal.

AOLâ??s enormous traffic guaranteed the success of Googleâ??s ad network, but as my book details, taking them on as a client was a high risk gamble that could easily have destroyed Google and driven it into bankruptcy.

Q: What do you regard as your most significant accomplishment while at Google?

A: From a marketing perspective, I would say it was creating and enforcing a brand architecture that put all of our emphasis on Google itself, instead of on innumerable individual sub-brands. Because of that, the Google name has not been diluted by competing with its own products. The only two exceptions during my time at the company were the social networking experiment orkut and the product search service Froogle. I argued against the latter name and lost, but ultimately Google recognized its mistake and changed the branding to "Google product search," which is what I had recommended.

Other areas I was proud to be part of included the companyâ??s response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the formulation of Googleâ??s corporate credo ("Ten things weâ??ve found to be true"), writing Googleâ??s April Fools jokes, and launching a highly visible engineering recruitment campaign.

Q: What should people know about Google that they donâ??t already know?

A: People who only know Google as an omnipresent, omniscient online service should realize that the company began as a small group of well-intentioned geeks who truly wanted to make the world a better place. Along the way, the company was forced to confront the reality that the world didnâ??t always see things from the same perspective, but the strength of their convictions led Googleâ??s executives to forge ahead regardless. The founders simply didnâ??t have the patience to wait for the rest of the world to figure out that they were right. This hubris was present from the very beginning and is the source of many of Googleâ??s current conflicts. Iâ??m Feeling Lucky helps readers to understand how that attitude was formed and forged by specific events that occurred early in the companyâ??s history. That background will help readers better grasp why Google does things the way it does today.

Sharp, Durable Blade Handles Tough Survival Tasks
Built to offer the versatility that adventurers, backpackers, and hunters need in the wilderness, the Ultimate Knife features a versatile 4.75-inch drop-point blade. This blade is half serrated to make quick work of cutting rope and other fibrous materials. It features full-tang construction for overall durability, and it is crafted from hard stainless steel, which allows for excellent edge retention.

Innovative, Ergonomic Design Delivers Versatility
Survival tools are only useful if they're easy to handle, so this knife features a comfortable, rubberized grip that's textured to prevent slippage. And because being a true survivor means making innovative use of your tools, the knife's handle features two holes for securely lashing it to a stick for use as a fishing spear--or whatever other bladed tool your situation calls for.

In addition, the handle base features a stainless steel pommel that can be used for pounding or hammering. A lanyard cord helps you keep track of the knife, and the lanyard features an integrated emergency whistle that can be used to attract attention--so others can keep track of you.

Balanced for optimum handling, this Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Knife has an overall length of 10 inches and weighs just 11.2 ounces--14.72 ounces with the included sheath.

Military-Grade Nylon Sheath with Smart Details
Just as versatile as the knife it protects, the included sheath folds open to reveal a diamond sharpener. The sheath also has a life-saving fire starter rod locked into a water-tight holder. This ferrocerium rod produces a shower of hot sparks when scraped against the rough surface of the striker notch that is incorporated into the back of the knife blade. For further versatility and functionality, the sheath includes a waterproof "Priority of Survival" guide tucked into a protective pocket on the back of the sheath.

The nylon sheath is crafted from lightweight, military-grade materials that are mildew resistant for long-term use in harsh climates. It includes a Velcro closure to keep your knife secure.
